Broken Horn Cattle Company

“It ain’t dying I’m talking about, it’s livin. I doubt it matters where you die, it matters where you live.”

Gus McCrae in Lonesome Dove

Our beef is born and raised in a quiet mountain community in Colorado. You can find peace in knowing exactly where and who your beef comes from. You can find pride in buying locally from a ranching veteran of 27 years and his family.

Our family prides itself on being transparent with our labeling and marketing.

You won’t see any fancy labels like “grass-fed” , “antibiotic free” or “humanely raised”. We don’t believe in fear mongering or guilt tripping. We believe in giving our animals the best possible care from birth to butcher.

We strive to be stewards of the land, regularly rotate our pastures for the highest quality nutrition, and do all of our cattle work old school; from the back of a horse and with well trained cow dogs.

Our cattle live most of their lives grazing the most beautiful mountain pastures, and what portion they spend not grazing they spend eating the premium grass hay we put up right on the ranch. When it comes time to finish them they get put on a finishing ration based on hay and grain. This process is what gives our beef that delicious marbling we all love. Once ready to be sent to processing, they are harvested at our local USDA inspected butcher, 307 Meat Company.

Everything that goes into our beef is monitored and picked thoughtfully and carefully. We care about our animals welfare, after all, a healthy animal produces the best quality beef.

We don’t try to do anything fancy or trendy. We do what we believe is right. We’re just a blue collar family doing what we love, wanting to share it with those around us. In a world full of a lot of noise, convoluted labels and attacks on ag, we want to be the place you can go and know that what you see is exactly what you get. You know exactly who you’re supporting and what you’re feeding your family.

Greg & Donna Sykes

The roots of this ol’ dream. First generation ranchers, Greg and Donna set roots down in a tiny, beautiful town in the mountains determined to live their own dream of ranching. The couple has been running cow calf pair operations for nearly 27 years all while raising a family to grow and love this way of life. The two bring an immeasurable amount of knowledge on the cattle industry, raising beef, running a profitable operation, cowboying and everything in between.

Andrew & Tayler Patterson

The dream of starting a direct to consumer beef business came from Tayler, the daughter of Greg & Donna. Spending her entire life being raised around cattle and horses, she became obsessed with this way of life just like her parents. When Andrew & Tayler met, it was obvious early on that they both agreed they would want to get back to this way of life as soon as possible. Agreeing that there was nothing better than working hard to raise and care for another creature as well as raise a family removed from modern society. Fast forward a few years and Broken Horn Cattle Company was born.

And I'd blaze my own trail and freely I would roam
Makin heavy miles on a waspy cold backed colt
Oh Lord take me back a few lives
Do my best to live by your light
Take me back 100 years or so
Take me back 100 years
Oh, take me back
.”
